Are You All About That Bass?

Are You All About That Bass?

There is without a single doubt that booty is IN. In 2014, music artists highlighted it and had their specific music singles reach the top of the charts, worldwide. So, is this a new “trend”? I mean, in the past it was all about a woman’s chest. Now, it’s “all about that bass”.

As I am the reserved “strength training columnist”, it’s my job (and pleasure) to write about current studies, current training trends, tried and true training techniques, etc. But, one can’t pretend not to see one of the most magnified body parts, and how awareness has multiplied. Now, I’m not going to get all technical with this concept. You all should know, by now, “technical” isn’t my specialty. Oh, and before I continue, let me place a disclaimer:  This content is, in no way, an attempt to be sexist, a male chauvinist, or anything like that. Seriously, let’s be real about something, ladies you all get weak knees when you see a man with a squat booty. Don’t even front, I read your hashtags.

Shows are won from the back

As a champion bodybuilder, I have seen, and been a part of several fitness competitions. There’s a saying amongst the bodybuilders, that goes “shows are won from the back”, which makes reference to lat spreads, back muscle thickness and striations, shredded hamstrings, heart-shaped calves, and of course, ridiculously striated glutes. As time has passed, the fact remains the same and it has crossed-over into the female competitions, as well. Figure, Physique, Bodybuilding, and Bikini. Don’t believe me? Log into just about any social media site, type in “booty”, “glutes”, “butt”, “ass”, put a hastag in front of it, and you will find that damn near every #fitchick is religiously training to build a perfect backside, and most have no problem displaying their daily “progress”. Glutes and abs. Now, in no way, should any one be shunned for the display. It’s the same as me flexing biceps in a selfie. Whoa! Wait. Don’t misunderstand. I’m not mad about the vast abundance of derriere “littering” social media. Not mad at all. Actually, I’ve enjoyed my intensive research to gather “data” for this subject. Oh, allow me to repeat that. This is, in no way, a topic being used to disrespect anyone… not one single person. So, before anybody goes getting their undergarments in a bunch, relax. Just friggin’ relax.

How does one break the internet?

Now, what was I saying?  Regardless of your stance, be it for or against, none can deny the growing popularity of the BOOTY. Don’t believe me? Let’s pretend that you don’t know some of the lyrics to bootylicious. If it hasn’t made such an impact on pop culture, then why are more and more people getting implants? I could name a few celebrities, many claiming their money makers to be au natural, only to be exposed as having faux bootay (I won’t name names). There are even some who’s rear view catapulted their careers. But (lol… but) there are plenty that have spent hours, days, and weeks, sculpting their gluteus maximus, and are just as proud as the red carpet walkers.

As I said before, ladies you too have a slight obsession with a man’s posterior. Whether you see the outline in a pair of jeans, some nice slacks or chinos, in his speedo, or even straight up birthday suit. What? Y’all thought most of us men didn’t know that women talk just as much crap as the fellas do? Women can get just as raunchy. I know. I’ve heard it. There’s nothing wrong with it, either. So why all the hype? Why now?

Baby Got Back

Honestly, it’s nothing new. I can date music going  back 20+ years that hold the subject of this, the largest muscle of the human body (for some of us, anyway), very near and dear. Yes, there have been many a song serenading the admiration of the hump, from both, male and female artists. A special salute goes out to Sir Mix-A-Lot. The thing about a nice ass, is that, it rounds out the physique. Now, don’t get me wrong, and I may catch some heat with this next statement, but not all butts are created equal. I’m sorry. It’s the truth. Tell you what… let’s pinpoint a specific “group” of people. The fit fanatics. The “Selfie” Kings and Queens. You know the ones. The “Hump Day” heroes. You can count these hams to be the envy of the less endowed individuals working on building their own set of cushions. They turn up as #MCM and #WCW, with their trunk being the focus… well, that, and the rest of their physique, supposedly. But, they’re not contained to just Mondays and Wednesdays. These are daily reminders to do your squats, to do your deadlifts, to get those lunges in. So, if you are wanting to add some meat to that crack in your back, or wanting to lift the humps or tighten the rump, you might be able to get some pointers from these asstastic individuals.

So, go forth, and build-a-butt… But, remember– “Never trust a big butt and a smile…”
